Stephen Ireland & his aquarium

  • Stephen Ireland & his aquarium

    February 2010

FOOTBALLER Stephen Ireland’s extravagant tastes have often been the subject of jibes from fans.

The Daily Express reports that the footballer has now spent £100,000 on Britain’s biggest domestic fish tank.

The Irish star has had a 6,000-litre aquarium installed during an interior refit of his £5million mansion. The aquarium has been installed and designed by Aquarium Architecture and is made from acrylic so it can withstand a hit from an errant ball flying off the nearby pool table.

The stunning tank is home to 500 exotic fish including yellow tangs, wrasses and pineapple fish, and also contains half a ton of coral shipped in from Fiji.

In addition, the custom built acrylic tank is also fitted with Wi-fi and a high-tech computer system so that it can be controlled via mobile and the internet.

Ireland, who has been fascinated by exotic fish since he was a child, described the tank, the centrepiece of the lobby of his home in Prestbury, Cheshire, as “immaculate”. He said: “It’s a breathtaking tank. When people come to the door and see the tank, their first reaction is ‘wow’.

“There’s a lot more to it than just glass and water. It’s very complicated with the pumps and water system we have.

“The guys that have done it are top-class and it’s immaculate.”

Ireland’s salt-water fish tank, which measures 13ft by 3ft and stands 8ft high, is believed to be the biggest privately-owned aquarium in Britain.

The tank comes complete with mahogany cabinetry and leather paneling.

Aquarium Architecture told Daily Express that “Stephen is passionate about tropical fish.

“His knowledge and genuine enthusiasm makes it a pleasure to work for him.”
