Diving with Sharks

If you are looking for an unforgettable experience, diving with sharks definitely ticks this box. There is nothing more thrilling than coming face to face with a Great White or swimming along the gigantic Whale Shark.

We have put together some of our favourite locations where you can dive with sharks.

White Sharks | Guadalupe Mexico

Guadalupe is considered the world’s best spot for white shark diving. Highly adapted predators, the Great Whites have up to 300 serrated, triangular teeth arranged in several rows. They have an exceptional sense of smell to detect prey. Great whites can detect one drop of blood in 25 gal (100 L) of water and can sense even tiny amounts of blood in the water up to 3 miles (5 km) away.

Gansbaai in South Africa is also famous for white shark cage diving.

Seeing a great white is an unforgettable experience.

 

Whale Sharks | Gladden Spit, Belize

If you would like to dive with the biggest shark in the sea, Belize is the ideal place for that. During the full moon days of May, June and July, hundreds of whale sharks can be seen. The whale shark which can grow up to 45 feet long is a gentle giant, feeding only on plekton. Another great location to swim with whale sharks is Maaya Thila in Maldives.

 

Hammerhead Sharks | Cocos Island, Costa Rica

Cocos Island is said to be the greatest place in the world to see hammerhead sharks, who school in the hundreds during summer months. You will also see whitetips, mantas and whale sharks. Cocos Island is not very easy to reach and you will need to have an Advanced Diver Certification before this trip, as some of the dives are deep.

 

Tiger Sharks | Beqa Lagoon, Fiji

Beqa Lagoon is one of the hottest spot for seeing sharks and the stars of all of them are the tiger sharks. You can also see eagle rays and giant grouper. Also a good location to see tiger sharks is Tiger Beach in Bahamas. You can even spot giant lemon sharks there!

 

If instead you would like to keep them in your home aquarium this is possible but a bit more complicated than a normal aquarium due to their size and requirements.

One potential inhabitant is the black tip shark. The black tip shark is actually considered one of the most stunning sharks in the ocean. It can reach up to 2 metres in length and up to 30kg in weight. Their ideal temperature is between 15C to 24C and that’s why they can often be found in shallow waters. The black tip is a very social shark and can be found in larger groups.

If you want to keep a black tip shark at home you will need a very large aquarium, 10,000 gallons large! Realistically most sharks’ aquariums can be found in public aquariums or in the houses of the super-rich due to its cost to install as well as to maintain.
