The Age of Aquarium

  • The Age of Aquarium

“Bringing the depths of the ocean to your home provides a wow factor that even the finest work of art finds hard to match.”

In an interview for Christie’s International Real Estate magazine our creative director Roland Horne talks about the increasing popularity of unique aquariums and the peculiar taste of Aquarium Architecture’s clients.

Christie’s International Real Estate magazine covers the arts, leisure, international cultural events and the world of ultra-luxury, alongside an unrivalled showcase of the world’s most exclusive homes.

For our clients it’s all about the design and the uniqueness of the aquarium’s inhabitants, says Roland. We always design something exclusive, customised to the client’s lifestyle and personal taste. In addition, the quality and the finish of the project plays an important role in our process. Our clients have extremely high standards and the aquarium needs to merge with the interior design and enhance its surrounding. Hence, we are always collaborating with top interior designers such as Finchattons, Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and others.

Head of design at international property firm Finchatton, Jiin Kim-Inoue tells that “Aquariums bring a sense of relaxation and tranquillity to a space; bringing part of nature into any space is both calming and healing. Aquariums can also bring movement and warmth to a color scheme, and they work well as room dividers, visually linking two spaces.”

Aquarium Architecture always thrives to make our client’s vision a reality even when we receive challenging requests.  For example, one of our clients, a rare fish collector, always wanted to add a peppermint angelfish into his tank.  The peppermint angelfish is one of the most sought after fish, a true aquarist obsession. At the moment there are two of them in the captivity, one in Japan and the other one in London. Aquarium Architecture acquired the one in London on our client’s request.

Other eccentric requests are sharks aquariums, jellyfish tanks as well as unexpected locations, designs or extremely large tanks. For example, a client in Nigeria asked for an aquarium that stretches over two floors. Also the unique aquarium design includes a slide through the tank.

The underwater world is fascinating and clients want a piece of the aquatic universe in the comfort of their home. They are also fascinated about having the most uncommon and striking design and aquatic life. Until recent who would have even thought that a slug could be an amazing addition to a tank?
